Irreducible Complexity: Obstacle to Darwinian Evolution
نویسنده
چکیده

A Response to Critics of Darwin's Black Box
In 1996 I published Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution. The main thesis of the book was that science has discovered in the cell biochemical systems that are what I term irreducibly complex, where the removal of one of the components of the system causes it to lose its function, and that such systems are very difficult to explain in Darwinian terms. I argued that irredu...
متن کاملIrreducible Complexity Revisited
Michael Behe’s concept of irreducible complexity, and in particular his use of this concept to critique Darwinism, continues to come under heavy fire from the biological community. The problem with Behe, so Darwinists inform us, is that he has created a problem where there is no problem. Far from constituting an obstacle to the Darwinian mechanism of random variation and natural selection, irre...
متن کاملReply to My Critics: A Response to Reviews of Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution
In Darwin’s Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution I argued that purposeful intelligent design, rather than Darwinian natural selection, better explains some aspects of the complexity that modern science has discovered at the molecular foundation of life. In the five years since its publication the book has been widely discussed and has received considerable criticism. Here I respond...
متن کاملOn the Concept of Information
In this article we address some fundamental questions concerning information: Can the existing laws of physics adequately deal with the most striking property of information, namely to cause specific changes in the structure and energy flows of a complex system, without the information in itself representing energy in any of its characteristic forms? Or is information irreducible to the laws of...
متن کاملEvolution and Complexity: The Double-Edged Sword
We attempt to provide a comprehensive answer to the question of whether, and when, an arrow of complexity emerges in Darwinian evolution. We note that this expression can be interpreted in different ways, including a passive, incidental growth, or a pervasive bias towards complexification. We argue at length that an arrow of complexity does indeed occur in evolution, which can be most reasonabl...
